Entity SEO

Entity SEO for South African service businesses

Entity SEO begins with a governed business record. It makes the same real organisation recognisable wherever customers and search systems encounter it.

In plain English

Entity SEO is the work of making a real business consistently identifiable across its website, structured data and trusted profiles. For a South African service business, that means one accurate name, official domain, contact route, service and service-area record, with location claims that match reality. Consistency reduces ambiguity; it does not manufacture authority.

What is the entity behind a service website?

The entity is the actual organisation or eligible local business represented by the site, not a keyword theme. Its identifying facts can include the recognised name, official URL, logo, contact details, legal or tax identifiers where appropriate, and genuine public profiles. Services, people and physical branches may be related entities, but they should not be collapsed into fictional locations or duplicated organisations merely to target more searches. Keep those distinctions visible in the site architecture.

Google recommends establishing the official site through Search Console, claiming an eligible Business Profile and adding relevant organisation details. Its Organization documentation says markup can help disambiguate an organisation and communicate administrative information. That is a clarification function, not an authority switch. The visible website, profile data and real-world business must still agree, and Google retains control over how information appears.

Which facts belong in the business source of truth?

Maintain one approved record for the trading name, legal name if relevant, canonical domain, primary contact routes, logo, service catalogue, service areas, staffed locations and authoritative profile URLs. Add an owner, source and last-confirmed date to each field. Where a detail varies by branch, make the relationship explicit instead of overwriting the organisation-wide value. Unknown or disputed data should remain flagged until a responsible person resolves it.

Use that record to populate the website, Organization or LocalBusiness markup, Business Profile and other managed listings. Google says profile information may also come from crawled pages, licensed data and user contributions, so discrepancies can reappear as suggested changes. A monthly comparison catches drift; a change trigger for moves, new phone numbers or discontinued services catches urgent issues sooner. Consistency is an operating process, not a one-off citation cleanup.

How should locations and service areas be represented?

Represent each place according to how the business really operates. Google allows a Business Profile for an eligible storefront or a service-area business that travels to customers, and its guidelines require accurate addresses and service areas. A virtual office is not a substitute for a staffed location. If customers are not served at a residential base, the address should not be presented as a public storefront simply to associate the business with a city.

On the website, distinguish a physical branch, a service area and remote delivery in visible language. A page about serving Johannesburg can explain availability, travel conditions and relevant work without claiming a Johannesburg office. Use LocalBusiness markup only where it truthfully describes the business or branch, and keep the phone, address and opening details aligned with the visible page. Geographic precision supports trust because it prevents the customer from acting on a false premise.

How should the website connect related identities?

Use the homepage or a dedicated organisation page for the primary Organization description, then connect genuine external identity pages with sameAs where they unambiguously refer to the same organisation. Schema.org defines sameAs as a URL that indicates an item's identity; it should not be used for a directory category, an unrelated partner or a page that merely mentions the business. More links are not automatically better than correct links.

Connect services to their provider and branches to the parent organisation in a coherent data model, while keeping the same relationships clear in visible navigation and copy. Test markup, inspect the live page and review the source record before release. External corroboration should be earned through real memberships, coverage, reviews and business relationships. Buying fabricated mentions or creating self-controlled profiles to simulate independent authority adds noise and can create policy risk.
